What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is exploiting a person using force, fraud, or coercion for the purposes of labor or commercial sex.

*Any minor under the age of 18 engaged in commercial sex is a victim of human trafficking.

What is Force, Fraud or Coercion?

Human traffickers use a variety of different tactics to control their victims. Below are a few examples:

Force:

  • Physical harm and/or restraint

  • Sexual assault

  • Confinement

Coercion:

  • Psychological abuse 

  • Manipulation

  • Physical and psychological isolation

  • Blackmail 

  • Giving or withholding substances to those with an addiction 

  • Threats against victim or another person

  • Threatens to report victim to immigration authorities or law enforcement.

Fraud:

  • False promises of:

  • Employment

  • Working conditions

  • A better life

  • Wages

  • A relationship
