How to Identify

General Indicators of Human Trafficking

  • No identification (driver's license/passport)

  • Living with employer

  • Unsure of location

  • Rehearsed or scripted responses

  • Others speak for them

  • Numerous inconsistencies with story

  • Patient exhibits fear, paranoia, anxiety

  • History of multiple visits for injuries

  • Is not in control of their money

  • Inability to move or leave job

Specific Indicators of Sex Trafficking 

  • Stated age is older than appearance

  • Evidence of sexual trauma

  • Multiple sexually transmitted infections

  • Unusual tattoos or brands on body that may indicate ownership

  • History of multiple pregnancies/abortions

  • History of drug addiction, abuse or mental illness

* Accompanying adult may state they are a relative/guardian

Specific Indicators of Labor Trafficking 

  • Stated age is older than appearance

  • Signs of excessive physical labor, malnutrition and/or dehydration

  • Fatigue, exhaustion or sleep deprivation

  • Minimizes/downplays extent of abuse or injuries

  • Does not control their identifying documents

  • Signs of sanitation related illness or pesticide/chemical exposure

  • Leaves against medical advice or refuses care

* Accompanying adult may state they are a relative/guardian
